…some strangeness in the proportion.” – Edgar Allan Poe.
This is one of my favourite quotes, so much so that I have it hanging above my desk as if to remind me never to hold back my inner strangeness when my mind is racing at three in the morning and sleep is but a daydream.
It’s true; there really is no exquisite beauty without some strangeness in the proportion. I wonder if anyone has ever been entranced by normalcy. What is normal anyway? Isn’t it always the uncharted, the peculiar, and the unusual that hold our intrigue? Aren’t most, if not all, staples of literary and artistic excellence and creative masterpieces throughout history scattered with eccentricity and uniqueness?
What I’ve always taken from this, in short, is simple: be weird; it just might be beautiful. All the more reason to be myself and have fun with my cartoon-like voices and spontaneous bursts of song.
